Prevention Through Knowledge
Although the City of Independence comprises only 9.5 square miles, the Independence Fire Department protects not only the 7100 residents of our community but the more than 35,000 business people who call Independence their corporate home.
The Independence Fire Department is led into action by Chief Peter J. Nelson who has served Independence for more than 7 years. His department has 25 full time professionals on staff and 9 volunteer firemen to support this engineering service.
The Fire Department is on call 24 hours a day with certified professionals trained for virtually every emergency. The Department certifies all Fire Fighters to the level of Paramedic and is equipped with the latest state of the art equipment to affect a swift and professional call into action.

The Department is proud of its role conducting training programs and taking many proactive measures to educate our young and older residents on the best way to avoid mishaps in the home, school or at work. Prevention through knowledge and practice is our greatest teacher. The City's Fire Department is particularly proud of many successful programs initiated and implemented in recent years like the Health Watch (Alert) Partnership Program.
Health Watch (Alert) Partnership Program
This unique program offers residents an emergency monitoring system that initiates help at the touch of a button (pendant worn around neck). This affordable partnership program with the Cleveland Clinic Foundation provides residents an excellent service and greater peace of mind for as little as $5.00 per month. Contact Kathleen Kapusta for more information regarding this program: 216-524-7373.
Child Restraint Seat Inspection Program
This special program provides specific information relative to the many variables that effect a safe application of child restraint seats i.e., capability with car, proper installation, and correct size of seat for the child, etc. Two of our firefighters are trained to National Standards.
Inspection every second week by appointment only.
Home Safety Evaluation Program
A free home safety inspection including carbon monoxide test and smoke detector awareness.
