Recreation & Wellness Opportunities

The Recreation Department offers a wide range of programs including exercise, education and recreation to meet the needs of the residents of Independence. Through quality facilities, community resources and a caring staff, this department strives to improve the quality of life for all residents of the community.

The Recreation Department is headed by Ed Kostyack and a staff of dedicated professionals. The department office is located in the Community Building (Civic Center) at 6363 Selig Drive, Independence, Ohio 44131. (216) 524-3262.

OFFICE HOURS:
Monday — Friday 6:00 am — 10:00 pm
Saturday 8:00 am — 8:00 pm
Sunday 9:00 am — 5:00 pm

PROGRAMS:
In 1992 the state-of-the-art Community Civic Center Building opened its doors to give the residents an opportunity to maintain their health through exercise and offers a variety of indoor programs such as:

Indoor Programs include:

  • A variety of aquatic programs, including "Learn to Swim"
  • Aerobic Programs
  • Yoga
  • Wrestling
  • Tumbling
  • Basketball Leagues — Youth & Adult
  • Basketball Camps

In 2000, the City rebuilt their outdoor pool facility to include a water park for children and in 1999 the City opened the doors to a child's haven called Liberty Park Playground. Plans are also underway this year for the reconstruction of the baseball diamonds and revamp of Elmwood Park.

Outdoor Programs include:

  • A variety of aquatic programs
  • Learn to Swim — Youth & Adult
  • Golf Lessons
  • Tennis
  • Volleyball — Youth & Adult
  • Little League
  • Softball
  • Soccer Leagues
  • Flag Football
  • Summer Playground
  • Soccer Camp

The Recreation Department strives to continue to provide its residents with recreational and wellness opportunities by utilizing the state-of-the-art facilities Independence is so proud of.

OTHER SERVICES:
The Recreation Department also provides residents the use of certain facilities upon request and availability.

Hall Rentals:

  • Elmwood Gym
  • Small Meeting Rooms in the Civic Center & the Outdoor Pool Facility

Pavilion Rental:

  • Kiwanis Pavilion
  • Outdoor Pavilion near Bocce Ball Courts

Tables & Chairs:
   (delivery upon request and availability)
