Fire Prevention

The purpose of the Fire Prevention Bureau is to conduct and oversee annual fire inspections of all buildings and businesses located within the City of Independence. The Bureau enforces codes found in the Ohio Fire Code. It also uses other recognized standards, such as the Ohio Building Code and The National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA), to ensure fire safety compliance is being followed in every building within Independence.

The Fire Prevention Bureau educates the public in proper fire safety and prevention by conducting safety talks and demonstrations for all businesses, civic and school organizations. It conducts Fire Extinguisher and Fire Safety training, upon request, for residents, business owners, and any individuals who work within the City of Independence.

The Bureau oversees the Independence Fire Department Home Safety Evaluation Program. This program offers free home safety inspections including carbon monoxide testing and smoke detector awareness.  Please call the Fire Department at (216) 524-4001 to schedule a Home Safety Evaluation at your convenience.

The Fire Prevention Bureau also spearheads the City-wide Knox Box program to promote easy access for emergency personnel into buildings in the City, especially after business hours. We now have a residential Box program for homeowners in Independence. Please call 216-524-4001 for more information regarding a residential Box.

The Bureau conducts fire investigations of all fires occurring in Independence. Investigations include determining origin and cause of the fire, and submitting a complete report to the Ohio State Fire Marshal

The Independence Fire Department Fire Prevention Bureau looks forward to continuing these programs and introducing more programs in the future to better serve our residential and business communities.
