The Independence Fire Department offers Public Education opportunities for both the public and private sector. We also have a program in which groups may come to the Fire Department for education and tours of the station and equipment.
Classes are offered in the proper use of fire extinguishers, home safety, disaster preparedness, special considerations and services for senior citizens, and other topics. Upon request, we will assist with fire drills at your school or business.
The Independence Fire Department instructs students in seven of our local schools on a wide variety of subjects, including stop-drop-cover and roll, safety in their home, smoke and carbon monoxide detector testing and maintenance, how to activate and use the 9-1-1 system, and how to make and practice a home escape plan.
In cooperation with six surrounding communities, the Independence Fire Department has use of a 39-foot Safety Trailer equipped with the following:
- Tornado/Hurricane simulator
- Cameras which allow parents to view their children from the outside
- Simulated kitchen and bedroom simulated smoke
Children can put into practice what they have learned about fire safety and safely exiting a burning building.
