The Independence Recreation Department offers Independence residents of all ages a full range of programs and activities.
The Civic Center is a 78,000 square foot facility for residents to enjoy, and our Recreation Department includes a high school-size gymnasium (featuring basketball, pickleball, volleyball, and more); our upstairs Aerobic and workout area, with a variety of aerobic and exercise classes, an indoor track, treadmills, spin bikes, elliptical and rowing machines and recumbent bikes, a fully stocked weight room with Nautilus and Universal machines and more; a racquetball court; our Indoor Pool area (with steamroom, sauna, whirlpool and locker rooms); and an atrium gathering space with pool, ping-pong, and air hockey tables and vending machines. We are open nearly every day of the year and have one of the lowest residential membership rates in the area. We offer learn-to-swim programs for all ages from infants to adults. We also offer water exercise classes, lifeguard training, and water safety instructor classes. All areas in our five-lane twenty-five meter indoor pool are available year round.
The outdoor pool is Olympic size, eight lanes, fifty meters, with a diving well. The diving well is equipped with a three-meter board and two one-meter boards. The activity pool includes a twenty-five foot water slide, water cannons, lemon drop, tumble buckets, rain drop and water playground unit. There is a separate kiddie pool for toddlers and a whirlpool/spa for adults. Pool building amenities include locker rooms, showers, air-conditioned concession stand, eating, and viewing areas. The building can also be rented and used for parties and meetings during the fall, winter, and spring months when the pool is not being used. During summer months the upstairs room is available for rental. The annual Dog Swim is held in September after the Outdoor Pool has closed for the season.
Elmwood Park, a forty-six acre parcel of land in the center of the community, includes all the amenities to enjoy outdoor family and sporting events. Five baseball diamonds (four lighted for night games), soccer fields, bocce courts, horseshoe pits, tennis and pickleball courts, two playground areas, Safety Town, and three picnic pavilions. The park is teeming with activities during the warm weather. The pavilions are available to residents on a first-come, first-served basis, and must be reserved in advance by calling the Recreation Department. There is no charge for the pavilions.
Tables and Chairs:
Tables and chairs, depending on availability, are delivered to residents free of charge. They can be reserved for graduation parties and various events at your home.
Elmwood Recreation Center:
Elmwood Recreation Center has a meeting room, gymnasium, and kitchen which may be reserved for meetings, parties, and sporting practices which can be reserved for a nominal fee. The building can only be reserved by a Resident 21 years of age and older. The signer of the contract must be present during the entire event including set up and clean up. If the signer is NOT present, the event will be automatically terminated.
Beautiful Elmwood Pond, centrally located in Elmwood Park, is home to the annual Kiwanis Fishing Derby, traditionally held the first weekend in May. For this event, the pond is specifically stocked with a variety of fish. Ice skating and hockey are available during the winter months. Signs will be posted when conditions are safe.
