City of Independence Department Links

Building
The Independence Building Department oversees commercial and residential permits needed to do work on homes or businesses in the City. 

Communications
Part of the Mayor's Office, the Communications team facilitates communication between the City, citizens and other stakeholders to foster a more productive, mutually beneficial relationship, increasing citizen involvement and input in all areas of the City's operations.   

Community Services
The Community Services Department offers a variety of educational, social, cultural, and recreational programs and activities.


Economic Development
The Economic Development Department provides businesses with the resources necessary to be successful in Independence.


Engineering

The Engineering Department is responsible for the plan review and construction inspection of major commercial and residential infrastructure projects as well as new home construction.  

The operations of the City's Finance Department ensure that there is a careful and accurate accounting of monies budgeted for each department and that all State and regulatory guidelines are met. 

The Independence Fire Department consists of Fire Chief Steve Rega, Assistant Chief Jim Wheeler, three Fire Lieutenants, and a Fire Prevention Lieutenant. There are three shifts of fire fighters, an administrative assistant, and ten part-time firefighters filling in as needed to maintain staffing on a daily basis. The IFD station houses three squads, two engines, a ladder truck, a brush truck, and staff vehicles.

Parks and Recreation
The Independence Recreation Department offers Independence residents of all ages a full range of programs and activities throughout our multiple facilities in beautiful Elmwood Park.

The men and women of the Independence Police Department are dedicated to protecting life and property and providing professional law enforcement services to those who live, work, and travel through our community.



Service
The Independence Service Department is responsible for rubbish and recycling collection, composting, sewers, snowplowing, road maintenance and repairs, signs and mailboxes, leaf pickup, landscaping in right-of-ways, and more.
