The Safe School Helpline®: 1-800-41-VOICE (1-800-418-6423), Extension 359
The City of Independence is one of thousands of schools nationwide that uses The Safe School Helpline® as part of their overall school safety plan. The Safe School Helpline is a 24-hour service that empowers students, parents and community members to report unsafe, at-risk situations without identifying themselves by calling. This number should NOT be used for medical or safety emergencies, or matters requiring immediate attention - for these instances, dial 911.
Authorities report that the Safe School Helpline proves extremely beneficial both as a reporting system and as a deterrent to prevent harmful activities.
- The Safe School Helpline prevents problems by allowing students, parents, staff and community members to report wrongdoing and illegal activities in schools.
- Safe School Helpline tips are anonymous. The caller’s name is never asked. It takes courage for kids to reach outside their inner circle of friends. Yet, they prove overwhelmingly anxious to do so, anonymously, to protect their friends, families and themselves from retribution. Parents appreciate this too. Follow-up questions can be asked by giving a case number to the caller, and asking them to call back in three school days.
- The Safe School Helpline is available any time, day or night. About 90% of calls are made after school hours. In most cases, the school receives a transcript of the call the next school day. If urgent, school officials are contacted immediately, regardless of the time of day. Calls are handled by one of the largest call centers in the U.S., using a multi-million dollar telecommunications network.
- Reports can also be made online.
To call the Safe School Helpline, dial 1-800-4-1-VOICE (1-800-418-6423), ext. 359, and follow the prompts.
