Around 1912, a high school reunion was held by women in the School Girls Club, a group of friends who attended Independence High School before 1900. It was so much fun that their husbands wanted to be included in the next one.
From that, grew the idea of a reunion for the whole village and former residents…for all to return on that special day. Home Day was born!
People brought picnic baskets, homemade ice cream and turtle soup was served, and games and foot races for young and old were held. Horseshoes clanked and flowers and garden produce were on display. Local talent provided entertainment, and prizes were given for the oldest and youngest person present, as well as for the one who had come the greatest distance; a tradition still carried on today.
Home Day was held every year, except during World War II. Over the years, some changes were made. Another day was added, making it Home Days, and booths are offered to local nonprofit organizations, such as the Art Guild, Historical Society, Boy Scouts, and the Garden Club, and a fantastic Parade that kicks off the event on Saturday.
Today, residents and people from other communities come to Independence Home Days because they know it is one of the best celebrations in the area…with great entertainment, rides and games, an abundance of delicious foods, fantastic prizes, and fun for all!
